Connecting the Polynesian Diaspora to Imagine and Support French Polynesia’s Future.
The Wayfinding Institute is a New York registered nonprofit organization founded by members of the Polynesian diaspora.
Drawing upon United Nations principles affirming the inalienable right to self-determination, the organization seeks to restore constructive dialogue between international frameworks, local governance structures, and the aspirations of the people of French Polynesia.
It serves as an independent, nonpartisan force dedicated to public awareness, rigorous policy analysis, and informed civic engagement in support of the institutional, cultural and socio-economic potential of French Polynesia.
OUR SHARED DIRECTION
A Future Prepared, Informed, and Shaped by Our People.
To navigate by wayfinding is to hold a destination in your mind long before it appears on the physical horizon, using the natural data of the ocean—currents, temperature, and celestial markers—to guide the journey forward.
At The Wayfinding Institute, we believe this ancient Polynesian science is the ultimate framework for navigating the complex realities of the modern world.
The Pacific is currently caught in the crosswinds of a rising geopolitical storm between the United States and China, creating unprecedented uncertainty for island nations.
We use the spirit of the wayfinder to cut through this turbulence, utilizing data-driven policy and international law to steer our people toward a secure, self-determined future on our own terms.
We do not prescribe one destination. We help our people understand the choices ahead and bring informed voices and useful expertise into the journey.
OUR WAYFINDING APPROACH
Wayfinding Through the Crosswinds Toward The Futures We Choose
OUR PEOPLE. OUR SHARED HORIZON.
Every Journey Begins With Finding Your People.
For generations, Polynesian wayfinders crossed vast distances by reading the stars, currents, winds, and knowledge carried from one generation to the next.
Today, the distance between our people is different—but the responsibility that connects us remains.
The Wayfinding Institute helps Polynesians across the world reconnect, contribute what they carry, and take part in shaping the future of our fenua.
The distance between us is real. So is the responsibility that connects us.
THE MANA OF THE MĀ'OHI DIASPORA
Our Fenua Extends Far Beyond Our Shores
For Polynesians, the concept of fenua is deeply rooted in a millennium-old culture: it goes beyond the physical earth we inhabit and steward, it is also a nurturing mother that shapes us and for whom we have a deep spiritual bond. This bond starts early: in Polynesian culture, the sacred tradition of Pū Fenua enjoins us to bury our newborn’s placenta at the foot of a fruit tree sapling.
This tradition may help explain why the Polynesian diaspora is so connected to their fenua, no matter where they live in the world or how long ago they left. This diaspora, estimated at over 20,000 Polynesians, is rich with lived experience, expertise, networks, and resources that remain largely unconnected. Too often viewed through the lens of “brain drain”, our diaspora has the potential to become one of our fenua’s greatest strategic assets to prepare us for the future. This critical role of distinct diasporas, across the world, is well known and documented throughout history
